Deed Of A Lifer

M.O.M was tattooed
On the fingers of his left hand
A mother silently sits there weeping
As he takes the witness stand
He is being charged with a murder
Of a man he hated so
The crown seeks for the death penalty
Yes Mom that means death row

The young man makes his guilty plea
He prayed to God “forgive my soul”
The verdict came down from the judge
It was life without parole
His mother pleas for leniency
Alas to no avail
Shackled and cuffed she watched the guards
Take her poor baby off to jail

He stands there in his prison cell
Hands clenched around bars of icy steel
He cogitates how things happened so fast
Everything was so surreal
He is sending telepathic messages
To his grieving, heartbroken Mom
He knows that she can hear him
Her spiritual presence makes him calm

Dear Mother, I am truthfully sorry
That I have disappointed you
You’ve always taught me right from wrong
And your love shone through and through
No more will you suffer from broken bones
Or have your flesh beaten black and blue
I thank you mom for giving me life
Now I am giving your life back to you
